It’s time to celebrate Independence Day, and remember the people who worked hard so that today we can all enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
As you light up your fireworks this holiday weekend, remember that this holiday won’t be so happy if you don’t keep safety in mind. It is very important to remember that fireworks, not handled safely, can be a dangerous thing.
Here are some things to remember when you’re having that light-filled display.
Always buy your fireworks from a well established retail store. You don’t want to end up buying faulty or illegal fireworks. Fireworks should always have labels, with the name and content of the fireworks. This is required by federal law, so if you see anything that doesn’t have a good label, you may not want to pick it up. Also avoid the use of home made explosives. Professionally made fireworks are always a better choice.
Have your display outdoors, on a clear, open, sturdy space; one free of trees and debris. Also make sure that no flammable liquids are nearby. Have spectators sit 20 to 40 feet away, depending on the type of fireworks you’re using.
Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby. You can dip your duds in the water to make sure they’re completely free of flames. Make sure the fireworks are cool and spark-free before you throw them away.
The National Council on Fireworks Safety has many good tips, to help keep you, your friends and family safe this holiday. They even have short and very informative videos that will take only a few minutes to watch!
Remember! Check your state laws to see where, when or how fireworks can be used. You can ask your fire department if you’re not sure. Also remember that no one under the influence of alcohol should light or handle fireworks! So if you want to have some fun with fireworks, steer clear of the beer!
Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!!
