Living With a Roommate

Many of us have had some experience with a room mate growing up. Needless to say, there have probably been days when we have been a little unhappy with our room mates. It’s easier not to feel that way if you put some thought into finding a room mate. Here are some things you might want to consider before jumping in:

  • Find someone you’re compatible with. Are you both outgoing? Do you both like having lots of friends over? How much noise can you tolerate? Figure out what circumstances you cannot live under. If your room mate loves to play loud music that makes you want to scream, it’s not a good look! It may be a little hard to find someone, but in the end, you’ll see that it’s worth it.

  • Once you’ve found a room mate, look at the apartment together. You may have differing opinions, and to prevent any problems, have both of you see it and agree that it’s what you want.

  • Make sure both of you fully understand the lease before signing it. The worse thing that could happen is signing a lease you do not understand! You and your room mate are equally responsible for the lease. To prevent conflict and complaints, ask you room mate about it and try to point out things you think they might have missed.

  • Have some type of room mate agreement. Sit with your room mate and discuss what you expect of each other. How is rent paid? How are utilities going to be split? Is smoking and drinking in the apartment okay? You can also discuss things like pets and allergies, visitors and parties as well as a cleaning schedule. You may want to write everything down and have both of you sign it, so that the terms are explicitly clear.

Don’t rush in and get stuck in an unhappy situation. Take your time and do it right! Good luck with your room mate search!
