As I had mentioned in my Renting Tips blog, it is crucial that you see an apartment or space before renting it. If you’ve seen the commercials for CarFax, they show a car on fire, and overlaid on the clip is someone typing their ad to sell the car that says “All new interior!” The same goes for homes – don’t be fooled! Although internet listing services and classified ads are great ways to find leads, nothing can replace physically seeing an apartment. Most likely the cream of the crop pictures were used in the ad and someone has carefully crafted language to appeal to the potential renter. Not seeing the apartment that you plan to rent is like buying a car without test driving it.
It’s also important to see the exact unit that you will be renting. Two of my friends discovered the importance of this after renting a new place. They rented a two bedroom, one bath apartment, but they did not see the exact unit. They go to move in and discover that the bathroom is located in one of the bedrooms. So every time someone needs to use the rest room, they have to cut through a bedroom. Imagine how awkward it must be sneaking into your roommate’s room in the middle of the night to use the bathroom….especially if your roommate’s girlfriend is over.
Don’t be deceived! Get the facts and be relieved!
